Single Shot Book Meme

Share what you are reading

The concept of the ‘book meme’ is widespread across the world of book lovers on the interwebs these days. It’s a way of sharing a little snapshot of what you are reading and it is fascinating to read what others are reading too.

Here is my own Single Shot book meme.

  1. Name your favourite book that you read as a teenager.
  2. Which book are you reading now, which page? Tell us the best quote from that page.
  3. The book you would most recommend to a young reader.
  4. The name of a book you abandoned and why.
  5. Most and least favourite genres.
  6. Name the book at the top of your To Read pile. Who publishes it?
  7. Have you shared your current reads on FridayReads recently? (Twitter, Facebook etc)
  8. Favourite author and why you love reading their work.
  9. When did you last give/receive a book as a gift? What was it?
  10. Tell us why you love to read!

And, for the record, here are my answers for 2nd August 2011.

  1. Name your favourite book that you read as a teenager.
I loved The Chrysalids by John Wyndham and The Day of the Triffids. I also loved Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams. In the non sci-fi pile was The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett.
  2. Which book are you reading now, which page? Tell us the best quote from that page.
I’m reading The Golden Man, a collection of short stories by Philip K Dick.
p.189 (The Last of the Masters), “It’s this heat. This damned heat.” Tolby cursed again.
  3. The book you would most recommend to a young reader.
Treasure Island by  Robert Louis Stevenson. One of the first really popular stories with a young child as hero/narrator.
  4. The name of a book you abandoned and why.
The Sigma Protocol a Robert Ludlum book but actually not completely by him. Many books with his name are finished/ghost written after his death. Eric Von Lustbader took over the Bourne Series.
  5. Most and least read genres.
    Most: Sci-fi; Least: Chick-lit
  6. Name the book at the top of your To Read pile. Who publishes it?
The Budapest Protocol by Adam Lebor. Published by @BeautifulBooks
  7. Have you shared your current reads on FridayReads recently? (Twitter, Facebook etc)
    Every week!
  8. Favourite author and why you love reading their work.
There are so many but I love to read, non-exclusively: Philip K Dick, JK Rowling, Douglas Adams, John Wyndham, Mervyn Peake and so many more. All are so skilful at creating the alternate world within my imagination.
  9. When did you last give/receive a book as a gift? What was it?
After World Book Night (UK). I received All Quiet on the Western Front.
  10. Tell us why you love to read!
I love to be taken to another world, to experience the skill of the author’s descriptive power to trigger my imagination.
